1945年7月16日，美国在本土新墨西哥州阿拉莫多戈沙漠的三一试验场进行了一场名为“三位一体”的核试验，爆炸了一颗名为“瘦子”的核装置，这是世界上第一颗成功试爆的原子弹，成为世界上第一个掌握核武器的国家。
原子弹，是利用铀235或钚239等重原子核裂变反应，瞬时释放出巨大能量的核武器，亦称裂变弹。原子弹是作为核武器之一，利用核反应的光热辐射、冲击波和感生放射性造成杀伤和破坏作用，以及造成大面积放射性污染，阻止对方军事行动以达到战略目的的大杀伤力武器。
