北京钟鼓楼始建于元代，是元、明、清三代的报时中心，作为一组高大巍峨的“时间建筑”，前后纵置、互相衬托着矗立于北京中轴线的北端——它们既是扼守“紫禁后护”的重要城市地标，也是“号令全城”的首都报时中心，始终与市民生活息息相关。

In the early 17th century scruple also came to be used as another name for 1/60th of a degree of a circle ， 1/60th of a minute ， and 1/60th of a day .“Scruple”源自拉丁语中的“scrupulus”。
