926年初，辽太祖耶律阿保机征服渤海国，改渤海国为契丹藩国，又因渤海国在契丹东部，故更名为东丹国，封太子耶律倍为东丹王，又因阿保机自封“天皇王”，封皇后述律平为地皇后，取天地人三才之意，封耶律倍为人皇王。故此，耶律倍又被称为人皇王、东丹王。耶律倍，契丹名图欲，又写作突欲、托云。
