铜元又称铜板，是自清末开始所铸造的各种铜币的统称。始于清光绪十五年（1889年），它中间无孔，与历代的方孔铜钱外形有着明显的不同。它的诞生，标志着我国货币铸造工艺从传统的手工翻砂铸造进入了先进的机器化生产，也是我国钱币史上“机制币”的新阶段。
