在几十年前VCD是家中看电影必备的物品，在1992年四月姜万勐在美国参加展览会，他看到了当时孙燕生展示了一项MPEG的解压技术，可以解码视频，当时已经有了CD能够储存声音并且进行播放，他便有了将两者结合起来的想法，在VCD诞生前，当时流行的是镭射影碟机，一台影碟机近万元并且体积庞大，即使如此在那时候的中国依旧卖出了近百万台的数量，可见当时人们对于该类产品的需求，在这个时候VCD便推了出来，价格只有镭射影片的十分之一甚至几十分之一，世界上第一台VCD现如今存放在安徽现代电视技术研究所中，在1993年安徽现代电视技术研究所对于VCD有过这样一段描述，这是本世纪末消费类电子领域中，中国有可能领先的唯一机会，可见当时的VCD诞生对中国。
